Fallout 1 Loading Screens: A Tribute to the Classic RPG

The loading screens in Fallout show a still image upon booting the game up. The last one is the historic RCA Corporation's Indian-head test pattern, used for calibrating black-and-white television sets from 1947 onwards.

Like Fallout 1, Fallout 2's loading screens revolve around still images while booting the game. Images include a mafia Vault Boy with a submachine gun and a tribal wearing a broken T-51b power armor helmet.

Fallout 1 Loading Screens

One of the loading screens is a slightly modified fotograph depicting a USN sailor operating the SG radar range and train console, dating back to roughly 1943. The alteration consisted of simply modifying the tint and adding an embossed VAULT-TEC sign to the metal flap covering the calibration knobs.[1]

In Fallout 3, the loading screens show snippets of the general information that is found in the stats section under the general tab on the Pip-Boy 3000, the current quest objective if one is active along with information regarding the various perks, creatures, factions, people and locations of the game. The backgrounds, like the game introduction sequence, are supposed to look like old projector slides. They show various articles and advertisements, most of which can be found as posters in the game, including slides from the G.O.A.T. examination. A minimalistic clock face shows loading time, as opposed to loading progress. It also displays helpful game hints.

In Fallout: New Vegas, the new loading screens feature media from the Mojave Wasteland setting, such as ads related to the casinos of New Vegas, NCR propaganda posters, and posters for the voting blocs from Vault 11. The loading icon is a roulette wheel instead of a clock or vault door. The three lines radiating out from the roulette wheel are from the insignia of Vault-Tec Industries, similar to those seen in Fallout and Fallout 2 booting screens. Amongst the pre-war advertisements on the loading screens is a poster for Dean Domino, a pre-War lounge singer who appears in the Dead Money add-on. They give many gameplay hints.

Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel does not have loading screens in the sense of image slides or displaying hints. When a next scene is loaded entering new sections, levels or Chapters, the game's logo shows on the screen, spinning.

In terms of upgrades, one big difference is that the game will be playable as "one sequential shot," as described by senior producer Philippe Ducharme. "From the moment you start the game to the moment you end the game, there are no camera cuts or load screens--unless you die. The Ishimura is now fully interconnected, so you can walk from Point A to Point Z, visit the entire ship, and revisit locations... It's now a completely unbroken experience."

Fallout 4 loading time has something to do with the FPS (Frames Per Second). FPS shows the times of that the images on the screen are refreshed per second. Fallout 4 allows you to select a predetermined FPS value according to your requirements. However, this feature may also cause long loading times in Fallout 4.

With the Corona-19 virus curbing my outdoor activities I decided to have another go at playing Fallout: New Vegas on PC. For this play through I bought the game anew from GOG.com. GOG has done an excellent job of fixing most of the bugs, crashes and other problems that continue to plague the version of the game available from Steam. One intermittent problem that remains, however, is an an infinite loading screen. When this happens the actual game will not launch and game play cannot continue. Very annoying.

Fallout: Between Good & Evil is a complete mod of Fallout. We have completely new maps, new cities, new world map, new characters, new dialogues and quests new items (weapons, critters, monsters), yet we remain faithful to the Fallout 1 atmosphere and Fallout 2 size and complexity. Currently, BGE is under heavy development, we are happy for anybody wanting to join our team or help by any other means, even with suggestions. Feel free to ask any questions at our forum: or visit our website (with screenshots)

In any case, hidden loading screens can be obvious (an unusually long hallway, an elevator ride, a door that takes 10 seconds to open when every other door takes 2, etc), but I never noticed it in God of War or Uncharted. In those games, squeezing through openings and boosting each other is natural given the themes and settings of the stories. Wouldn't the games make less sense if they were completely stripped out?

Funny because I love those hidden loading screens and since I grew up with the PS1 horrendous loading time a couple of seconds now don't really bother me at all, on the contrary it gives me a little break from the action

No more loading screens or really fast travels are just a "little" advantage we will get with the kind of custom SSDs of PS5 and Series X. Usage of system RAM and game design freedom are key, at least that's what I think ; ).

One of the biggest differences between the last and current generation of consoles is the vastly improved loading times of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. As a result, many fans have suggested that this generation will see the end of disguised loading screens, which occur when players are forced to squeeze through tight gaps or slowly climb over something to allow the game to process the next area. For example, when Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart launched earlier in the PS5's lifecycle and had players seamlessly jumping through rifts with little to no loading times, fans believed this would set the bar for the current generation. However, disguised loading screens play a bigger role than many people may realize.

Kurt Margenau, who works for Naughty Dog and has directed the likes of The Last of Us Part II and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, recently entered into a Twitter conversation with The Washington Post's game reporter, Gene Park. He explained that these set pieces were used for more than just loading times and that they offer many benefits. As a result, it appears that they're here to stay.

Margenau also mentioned how these disguised loading screens can be deliberately used for dramatic effect. For example, as the player watches their character slowly enter a new area, the tension builds as the slight pause gives them time to ponder what marvels or terrors await them on the other side. Additionally, video game graphics are becoming increasingly impressive, and the contrast of emerging from such a tight space can further accentuate particularly stunning environments, especially ones that are vast or overbearing.

Of course, these set pieces do also help to load new areas, but such a need is vastly reduced by the power of the current generation consoles. As a result, developers could do away with these disguised loading screens, but given their many other benefits, it seems that they're here to stay.

While SimCity 2000 was generating terrain for a new game, it told you it was "creating hills" and "carving water" and "reticulating splines". This became a running gag, and every game in The Sims series has mentioned those dang splines on the loading screens alongside nonsense like "extrapolating empire eigenvectors" and "making manic mansions". It's become a signature, something to lighten the mood while we're waiting for The Sims 2 to finally start.

What game has loading screens that don't suck? Whether it's one with useful tips or a joke or just something that looks real nice and doesn't last too long, what's your favorite loading screen? Ones you add via mods, like the many Skyrim load screen replacers (opens in new tab), totally count. 2ff7e9595c
